Is Christianity Credible
  • in the 21st Century ?

There is no need of, or use for, a god.

Naturalism says,
  • We are here because one odd group of fish had a peculiar fin anatomy that could transform into legs for terrestrial creatures; because comets struck the earth and wiped out dinosaurs, thereby giving mammals a chance not otherwise available (so thank your lucky stars in a literal sense); because the earth never froze entirely during the ice age; because a small and tenuous species, arising in Africa a quarter of a million years ago, has managed, so far, to survive by hook and by crook. We may yearn for a 'higher' answer—but none exists.

  • Stephen Jay Gould

Has Modern Science

 proven that

Christianity is not Credible?
6
Credibility Tests for a Christian Worldview:
  • 1.  Consistency
  • Ž Do all the pieces fit?
  • 2.  Completeness
  • Ž Are any pieces missing?
  • Correspondence
  • Ž Does the picture make sense?

The Evidence
  • The cosmological argument
  • The anthropic argument
  • The teleological argument
9
The Cosmological Argument:

The Origin of the Universe
10
The Kalam Cosmological Argument
  • Whatever had a beginning had a cause

  • The universe had a beginning

  • Therefore the universe had a cause

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth”

“if you are a religious person,
it's like seeing the face of God”

"“Astronomy leads us to..."
  • “Astronomy leads us to an unique event, a universe which was created out of nothing and delicately balanced to provide exactly the conditions required to support life. In the absence of an absurdly-improbable accident, the observations of modern science seem to suggest an underlying, one might say, supernatural plan.”
  • Arno Penzias

The Anthropic Argument:

The Fitness of the Universe

Right Kind of Laws
  • F = G

Fine-Tuning in Nature
  •  Parameter Precision
  • Gravity 1 in 1040
  • Electromagnetic Force 1 in 1040
  • Strong Nuclear Force 1 in 1020
  • Ratio of Strong Force
  •    to Electromagnetic Force 1 in 10100
  • Ratio of Protons to Electrons 1 in 1036
  • Initial Mass Density and
  •    Expansion Rate 1 in 1060

  • And the list goes on....

25
"A common sense interpretation of..."
  • A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a superintellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as with chemistry and biology.

  • Sir Fred Hoyle
26
"“There is for me..."
  • “There is for me powerful evidence that there is something going on behind it all....It seems as though somebody has fine-tuned nature's numbers to make the Universe....The impression of design is overwhelming.”

  • Paul Davies

"Many factors of solar system..."
  • Many factors of solar system enable life on earth

"These dark plumes
where the..."
  • These dark plumes
    where the comet fragments struck
    are bigger than the Earth!
32
Right Kind of Moon
  • The Moon has slowed us,
    kept us steady,
    given us tides,
    stabilized our orbit.
  • Without it,
    life could not exist.

"“As we survey all..."
  • “As we survey all the evidence, the thought insistently arises that some supernatural agency – or, rather, Agency – must be involved.  Is it possible that suddenly, without intending to, we have stumbled upon scientific proof of the existence of a Supreme Being?  Was is God who stepped in and so providentially crafted the cosmos for our benefit?”

The Big Question:
  • Am I an accident?
